The Houston Gamblers secured a hard-fought 17-13 victory over the Columbus Aviators in a game that shifted from early offensive rhythm to a gritty defensive showdown.
Houston came out sharp from the opening drive. Quarterback Nolan Henderson led a 13-play, 80-yard march that lasted over seven minutes, setting the tone early. A clutch fourth-down catch by Justin Hall kept the drive alive before Jalen White punched it in for the opening score. The Gamblers followed that with another long drive, capped by Henderson himself on a read-option keeper to make it 14-0.
Columbus responded behind Jalan McClendon, who delivered a pair of big throws to spark the offense. After connecting deep with Antwane Wells Jr. and finding Alize Mack downfield, McClendon finished the drive with a rushing touchdown. The Aviators kept momentum going with another scoring drive, cutting the deficit to 14-13 heading into halftime.
From there, the game turned physical. Both defenses stepped up, shutting down scoring entirely in the third quarter. Houston’s defense controlled the line of scrimmage, limiting Columbus to minimal production and forcing key mistakes at critical moments.
The turning point came late in the fourth quarter. After Houston extended the lead to 17-13 with a field goal, Columbus drove into the red zone with a chance to take the lead. That opportunity vanished when Eugene Asante forced a fumble, the only turnover of the game, sealing the win for Houston.
Defensively, the Gamblers dominated. Marvin Moody Jr. led the unit with 10 tackles, while the team recorded three sacks and six tackles for loss, holding Columbus under 250 total yards.
Houston now looks ahead to a rematch against Columbus, set for Friday night on FOX, where both teams will meet again with adjustments and momentum on the line.
