CFP National Championship Preview: Michigan vs. Washington

The entire season for the Michigan Wolverines could be summed up as a battle against all odds, a theme resonating strongly within the team. Their journey has now culminated in a final clash against the Washington Huskies.

Facing off in the much-anticipated College Football Playoff National Championship, the top-seeded Wolverines and second-seeded Huskies, both boasting an impressive 14-0 record, are set to make history. This match-up, slated for January 8th at Houston’s NRG Stadium, is particularly notable as it marks the last championship game of the CFP’s four-team format, paving the way for an expanded 12-team structure in 2024.

Michigan’s path to the final was anything but smooth. They faced intense scrutiny amidst a controversial sign-stealing scandal that dominated headlines. However, their resilience shone through, especially in their nail-biting 27-20 overtime triumph against Alabama, the reigning SEC champions, at the Rose Bowl Game. Michigan’s offensive tackle, Trevor Keegan, reflected on their journey: “We’ve faced numerous challenges and hurdled over every accusation and adversity. People’s opinions about our tactics don’t phase us. This team’s unity and perseverance were evident in the final quarter and during overtime.”

Their victory over Alabama not only marked Michigan’s first CFP victory but also ended a streak of semifinal losses from previous seasons.

Meanwhile, Washington’s participation in the championship is a bittersweet moment as they prepare to leave the Pac-12 for the Big Ten in 2024, amidst major conference realignments.

This championship also breaks a trend, being the first since the inaugural 2014 season to not feature an SEC team. Instead, it showcases two powerhouses vying to join the elite club of teams with a 15-0 or better season record.
