Argentina continued its march toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Honduras on Saturday night at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas.
The reigning world champions controlled the match from start to finish, with Lautaro Martinez and Giuliano Simeone providing the goals in a dominant performance. While fans hoped to see Lionel Messi take the field, the Argentine captain remained on the bench as head coach Lionel Scaloni continues to carefully manage his recovery from a hamstring injury suffered on May 24.
Argentina dictated possession throughout the first half and nearly opened the scoring on multiple occasions. Giovani Lo Celso came close with a curling effort that rattled the crossbar, while Honduras goalkeeper Edrick Menjivar was forced into several key saves to keep the match level.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 37th minute when Nicolas Tagliafico was brought down inside the penalty area by Cristopher Melendez. Martinez stepped up and calmly converted the penalty, giving Argentina a deserved 1-0 lead.
The Inter Milan striker continued to be one of the game’s standout performers after halftime. In the 54th minute, Martinez delivered a clever backheel pass that split the Honduras defense and found Giuliano Simeone, who finished confidently past Menjivar to double Argentina’s advantage.
From that point forward, Honduras struggled to create meaningful chances as Argentina’s midfield and defense maintained complete control. Tomas Aranda nearly added a third goal, but Menjivar produced another strong save to keep the scoreline respectable.
Despite rotating parts of his squad and giving opportunities to younger players, Scaloni was pleased with the team’s identity and overall performance.
“Maybe it could have been done better, but as for the team’s hallmark, its identity, I think it remains intact, and that’s the most important thing,” Scaloni said after the match. “That’s what we’re looking for, in the end, not to break that identity.”
Argentina will now travel to Alabama for its final tune-up match against Iceland before opening its World Cup campaign against Algeria on June 16 in Kansas City.
With Messi expected to see minutes before the tournament begins, all eyes will be on the next friendly as Argentina looks to finalize preparations for another run at football’s biggest prize.
Argentina’s victory extends the team’s winning streak to six matches and further reinforces why La Albiceleste enters the 2026 FIFA World Cup as one of the favorites to defend its title.
