Carlos Correa returns to Houston Astros in 2025 MLB trade deadline blockbuster deal

Carlos Correa Returns to the Houston Astros in Shocking Trade Deadline Deal

Astros acquire Twins’ Carlos Correa, Marlins’ Jesus Sanchez

In one of the most significant moves of the 2025 MLB Trade Deadline, the Houston Astros have re-acquired Carlos Correa, bringing the franchise icon back home. Correa waived his no-trade clause to complete the deal with the Minnesota Twins, which sends minor league pitcher Matt Mikulski and cash considerations to Minnesota. The Twins will also cover $33 million of Correa’s remaining $96 million contract.

The move comes as the Astros aim to strengthen their roster for a deep postseason run. Correa, who will shift from shortstop to third base due to Isaac Paredes’ injury, is expected to be active for Houston’s upcoming series at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox.

A Houston Legend Returns

Carlos Correa was selected by the Astros with the first overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft. He became a cornerstone of the team’s rebuild, helping lead Houston to six playoff appearances, three American League pennants, and a World Series title in 2017. Known for his clutch performances and leadership, Correa remains one of the most popular players in franchise history.

“This is home. I’m coming back to finish what we started,” Correa told MLB.com following the trade. He also mentioned the opportunity to be closer to family and to rejoin former teammates like Jose Altuve as key reasons for accepting the move.

Contract Terms and Additional Trades

Under the terms of the deal, Correa will remain under contract through 2028. The Twins are reportedly paying $33 million of the $96 million owed to him. In addition to acquiring Correa, the Astros also added infielder Ramón Urías from the Orioles and outfielder Jesús Sánchez from the Marlins to bolster the roster depth.

Astros general manager Dana Brown emphasized the importance of the move. “We believe this deal puts us in a strong position. Carlos brings postseason experience, leadership, and a spark to the team,” Brown said in a press conference.

The Championship Window Is Still Open

Despite an inconsistent 2025 season, Carlos Correa has shown flashes of his All-Star caliber play. He is batting .267 with 7 home runs and 31 RBIs across 93 games. A return to Minute Maid Park could be the spark he needs to regain top form. Houston fans are eager to see his return, and the franchise is clearly betting that his presence can energize the clubhouse and the city.

This trade is not just about sentiment—it’s a strategic move to make another championship push. The Astros are making it clear they are not done winning, and Carlos Correa’s return signals a renewed sense of urgency.
