In front of a capacity crowd of 10,230 fans, Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz and Lamont Roach Jr. battled through twelve intense rounds Saturday night at the Frost Bank Center, ending in a majority draw that immediately sparked calls for a rematch.
Cruz retained his WBC Interim Junior Welterweight Title, while Roach left the ring with a second consecutive majority draw in 2025—an outcome that left both fighters visibly frustrated.
One judge scored the bout 115–111 for Cruz, while the other two returned 113–113, creating one of the most debated scorecards of the year.
Early Knockdown Sets the Tone
The fight was competitive from the opening bell, with Cruz charging forward behind looping power shots. In Round 3, one of those punches produced the only knockdown of the fight—a left hand that forced Roach’s glove to touch the canvas for the first knockdown of his career.
Roach wasn’t hurt, but the knockdown changed the rhythm of the fight, forcing him to plant his feet and exchange inside rather than dictate from range.
Despite the setback, Roach’s precision helped him outland Cruz 191–159, showing his success in the middle and late rounds.
Roach Adjusts and Takes Control Late
As Cruz continued applying pressure, Roach made a key tactical adjustment in the middle rounds, using a catch-and-shoot style to intercept Cruz both entering and exiting the pocket. The shift momentarily stalled Cruz’s offense and quieted the San Antonio crowd.
A point deduction against Cruz for excessive clinching in Round 7 brought the fight nearly even, neutralizing the earlier knockdown and adding to the scorecard chaos.
By the championship rounds, momentum swung back and forth as Cruz surged with aggression while Roach responded with sharp counters that repeatedly snapped Cruz’s head back.
Both fighters believed they had done enough.
Post-Fight Reactions: Frustration on Both Sides
Both men expressed dissatisfaction with the scoring—and especially with the officiating.
Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz
Cruz insisted he won clearly and pointed toward the referee as a factor in the outcome.
“I did my job. The ref was on his side. The judges too. The crowd in San Antonio saw I won this fight.
Absolutely I’d do a rematch — with a different referee. The referee took this fight from me.”
Lamont Roach Jr.
Roach, now winless in two consecutive fights due to majority draws, demanded fairness moving forward.
“All I want is a fair shake. I think I should have won a close victory.
I don’t accept this at all. I clearly thought I won a close fight. I’m tired of this.
Hats off to Pitbull. I gave the fans a great fight.”
Both fighters expressed interest in a rematch, setting the stage for a potential second meeting at 140 pounds.
